Student Spotlight - Brodie Sanders
The theme of National Reconciliation Week 2025 is 'Bridging Now to Next'.
From the heart of Shepparton, proud Yorta Yorta man Brodie Sanders is forging a path in the trades with determination, cultural pride, and a clear vision for the future.
Currently in his final year of the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (UEE30820) at GOTAFE, he’s not just building a career, he’s building a legacy.
“I’ve always been a hands-on person,” he shares.
“Becoming an electrician stood out to me because of the numerous different pathways you can take with the qualification.
“It’s a course that opens doors right across the country.”
Like many students, his journey hasn’t been without its challenges.
Time management in particular proved to be a hurdle for Brodie.
Balancing study with personal commitments led to moments of stress and feeling overwhelmed.
But thanks to the support of GOTAFE’s Koorie Unit, he was able to find his rhythm.
“The Koorie Unit has been incredible,” he says.
“Their continued support, whether it’s helping me understand course material or just believing in me, has made a huge difference.
Their patience, clarity, and willingness to help gave me confidence when I needed it most.”

Brodie is deeply connected to his heritage and speaks with passion about what culture and community mean to him.
“Culture is my roots; it’s identity,” he says.
“When you have a strong identity, you can be a strong person,” he explains.
“Community brings people together.
“It’s a safe space for people to feel not just seen but heard; a space to learn, to share, and to connect.”
During Reconciliation Week, these values take on even greater meaning.
“Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to acknowledge the past and learn more about Indigenous history,” he says.
“It’s about committing to a shared journey; walking together for the betterment of our country, our people, and our cultures.”
Looking ahead, his ambitions go beyond personal achievement.
After completing his studies, he hopes to deepen his knowledge in the electrotechnology industry and give back by supporting others on the same path.
And his message to fellow Koorie students is both heartfelt and empowering:
“Stay proud, stay grounded, and don’t be afraid to take up space. You’re not just doing this for yourself—you’re opening doors for those coming after you. Keep going, you’ve got this.”
