Course Overview
Course start dates are indicative and are subject to change. Students will receive information from their teacher upon enrolment including a confirmed start date and timetable. If applicable, students will also receive information about a course induction and directions on where to go on the first day.
The units offered within the Plumbing Licence for Common Units Skill Set allow students to develop the foundation skills required for professional practice in the Plumbing industry. These units are a requirement by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) for any student working towards becoming a licenced Plumber.
This skill set covers subjects such as:
- legal and regulatory requirements
- business planning
- work place safety
- technical knowledge of regulations and codes
- estimating and costing of projects
This skill set is offered to Plumbers that wish to widen their experience within the trade, and to plumbers wishing obtain licencing within the Plumbing trade through the VBA.
Students wishing to pursue licencing in any of the generalised plumbing fields or specialised plumbing fields should refer to the additional skill sets and short courses that are offered by GOTAFE.

This course, combined with the relevant CPC32420 Certificate III in Plumbing prepares graduates with the required skills and knowledge to perform tasks as a:
- Licenced Plumbing Contractor or
- Licenced Air Refrigeration Technician or

Attendance & commitment
General public blended delivery | 5 months course length | Part-time study load
Students are expected to:
- Attend on campus 1 day for course induction, as per timetable.
- Attend a fortnightly 2 hour virtual class.
- Spend approx. 6 hours per week working through their course materials research, revision and completion of assessments.

Entry requirements
Student requirements
To enter this course students must:
- hold a relevant Certificate III in Plumbing, or be authorised to undertake plumbing work by an Australian regulator/licensing body. In Victoria the licencing body is the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).
- Laptop/computer with internet access
- Access to digital camera or video camera for visual and audio assessment tasks
- General stationary (Pens, pencils, rulers etc.)
- AS 1684.4-2010 Timber Framed Construction manual
- NCC 2022 volumes 1,2,3 (electronic edition)
Credits for units may be available if the student has already:
- completed a Certificate IV in Plumbing Services (before 2025)
- holds a current licence with the VBA
- holds a relevant Certificate IV or Diploma in Building and Construction

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

This course is available as part of the Free TAFE scheme for eligible students.
