Course Overview

The Journeyman Exam is designed to assess whether an individual possesses the skills and knowledge required to work as a registered plumber. The exam comprises of six streams: Drainage, Gasfittng, Mechanical Services, Roofing, Sanitary and Water Supply. The assessment is conducted by external Victorian Building Authority (VBA) approved examiners and aligns with CPC32420 Certificate III in Plumbing.

Assessment methods
General public face-to-face delivery | 10 days course length | Full-time study load
Students are expected to:
- Attend all sessions.
- Complete the required units in line with the Certificate III in Plumbing qualification prior to sitting the exams in any streams.
- Attend 5 days (Course revision) on campus (Mon – Fri) from 8.00am – 4.00pm (7 hours per day).
- Attend up to 5 days (Practical exams) on campus (Mon – Fri) from 7.30am – 4.00pm (7.5 hours per day).

To be selected for this course students will need to have completed or currently be enrolled as a 3rd/4th year Apprentice in CPC32420 Certificate III in Plumbing and completed all units within the stream they are wanting to obtain a licence in.
Student resources
Students must have access to:
- All appropriate Australian Standards (ie. AS3500 STANDARDS, HB39 (code of practice) regulations)
- A laptop with internet access
- A digital camera or video camera for visual and audio tasks.
- General stationery (pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks, calculator etc.)
- Appropriate workwear (long-sleeved shirts mechanical welding, long pants, and safety boots).
- Safety glasses
- Electrical tester (ie neon tester or voltstick).

- Offer – We’ll review your application, contact you if we require anything else, and send you an offer. To secure your place, accept your offer and make any required pre-commencement payment.
- Welcome to GOTAFE – We’ll finalise your enrolment and share everything you need to feel ready. You may be asked to attend an online or in person induction session where we’ll outline the support available to you from day one.
Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

This course is available as part of the Free TAFE scheme for eligible students.

Contingent Study Arrangements
Where a situation arises that prevents campus attendance (such as COVID restrictions, natural disasters, etc.) and it is deemed an appropriate response in protecting the health and safety of staff, students, and visitors, this course will adapt to alternative training arrangements, possibly using online methods of teaching and/or communication while students engage from home with their Trainers. Any required practical components of the course will be moved to a more appropriate time.
