Course Overview

This skill set is for students required to service and repair carbon dioxide refrigeration systems.

This course will provide individuals with a basic understanding of carbon dioxide safety requirements, relevant standards and legislation, and operating functions of carbon dioxide refrigeration systems. Students will complete practical activities that will provide them with a basic understanding of sub-critical and trans-critical CO2 refrigeration systems and how to service them.

If individuals do not meet the entry requirements additional training can be provided. Alternative delivery options can be offered with training conducted at other sites to assist with personnel logistics. Please enquire for further details regarding special delivery options.

This short course prepares graduates to work as Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Specialists towards Natural Refrigerants.

Attendance & commitment

Workplace blended delivery | 4 days course length | Part-time study load

  • This course is delivered via a blend of online and face-to-face block training.
  • Students are expected to attend on-campus for training over 2 blocks during delivery. Each block is generally five 8-hour duration training sessions. Students are required to spend time (outside of class time) in self-directed research and learning. Also in preparation for completion of assessment tasks (outside of class time) including revision and reassessment.
  • The total duration of this course may vary depending on students' previous training and Credit Transfers that may be available.

Pre-apprenticeship blended delivery | 4 days course length | Part-time study load

  • This course is delivered via a blend of online and face-to-face block training.
  • Students have 2 options and are either expected to attend on campus for training over a 1-2 day block and complete 2 days of theory work online remotely or attend on campus for training for a 4-day block. Each block is generally training session days of 8 hours in duration.
  • Students may be required to spend time (outside of class) in self-directed research, learning, and preparation for completion of assessment tasks (outside of class time) including revision and reassessment. The total duration of this course may vary depending on students' previous training and Credit Transfers that may be available.

Before you begin

Entry requirements

It is essential that individuals undertaking this skill set already hold the following units:

  • UEERA0053 Install, commission, service and maintain medium temperature systems AND
  • UEERA0051 Install, commission, service, and maintain air conditioning systems OR Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Participants will also require a Trainee or Full Refrigerant Handling licence.

Applicants seeking competencies in natural refrigerants are required to be generally, reasonably fit, and have a good command of English and maths.

Student resources

To undertake this course students will need access to a suitable laptop for online learning/face-to-face learning, and bring/wear appropriate workwear, safety boots, and safety glasses.

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
