GOTAFE entry requirements

Students must be currently working in a Veterinary Clinic or Welfare Shelter where dogs and cats are routinely microchipped, and where they are supported by a qualified veterinarian (or have a written agreement for supervision with an authorised veterinary implanter).

Students are required to hold one of the following qualifications prior to enrolling into this short course:

• Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing
• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
• Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation
• Certificate III in Local Government (Animal Management)
• Certificate IV in Animal Welfare (Regulation)
• Certificate III in Animal Technology
• National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing (Level 5) — New Zealand
• Veterinary Nurse (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) United Kingdom.
• Level 3: Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons — National Vocational Qualification in Veterinary Nursing
• Diploma in Animal Technology
• Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing
• Associate Degree in Veterinary Nursing

Graduates of these qualifications can apply for their microchipping licence in Victoria.

Information for students

Participants will need to have access to reliable internet and computer, with a camera. All participants will be required to:

• Microchip animal replicas via Zoom in front of the qualified trainer and assessor
• Have access to necessary equipment and resources typically available in an animal care facility where microchips are implanted.
• Keep a logbook which documents the live cat and dog implants, all supported by a qualified Vet.

This program is delivered over 6 weeks but students may take up to 6 months to complete the assessments.

Licensing/regulatory requirements

Regulatory requirements apply to this unit but vary according to state/territory jurisdictions

Student resources

Students must have access to:

• A laptop/computer with internet access
• A digital camera or video camera for visual and audio assessment tasks
• General stationary (Pens, pencils, rulers)

2. Prepare – Gather any documents you may need, like photo ID, concession or eligibility evidence, residency or visa details, prior study or credit evidence, or your USI (we can help you find or create this).
3. Apply – Click Apply Now and complete your application – its quick and easy.
4. Skills Check – Some courses include a language and numeracy evaluation so we can tailor the right support before you start.
5. Offer – We’ll review your application, contact you if we require anything else, and send you an offer. To secure your place, accept your offer and make any required pre-commencement payment.
6. Welcome to GOTAFE – We’ll finalise your enrolment and share everything you need to feel ready. You may be asked to attend an online or in person induction session where we’ll outline the support available to you from day one.
   

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

• Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) does not apply to non-accredited short courses.
