Unlock your future with careers advice
Tips to help you prepare for a career advice session.
Whether you are just finishing school, changing jobs or returning to study, having the right careers advice can make all the difference.
GOTAFE’s team of Careers Advisors are here to help you explore your options, identify your strengths and plan a pathway towards a career you will love.
Once you have booked a session with our friendly Careers Advisors, here are some ways to prepare for a career advice session:
What are you hoping to achieve in your session?
By heading into a session with an idea of what you would like assistance with, it will help both you and your Careers Advisor.
Do you want to learn more about education or employment options, or both?
Deciding prior to the session will help you have a clearer understanding of what support you need.

Write down some questions you might have
This will drive the direction of the session and further uncover the type of support you need.
Questions you could ask include:
- What courses or roles will align with my skills and interests?
- How can I use my existing skills and experience in a new field?
- Can I have help writing a cover letter or preparing for a job interview?
Having some questions prepared will help steer the conversation towards an outcome suited for you.
Gather your information
To get the most out of your careers advice session at GOTAFE, it helps to come prepared.
Here’s a list of useful things to bring:
- A current resume or a list of your previous jobs, work experience and volunteer roles
- Certificates and qualifications
- Information about your visa and vivo status (if you are not an Australian citizen)
Bringing these items will help your Career Advisor give you tailored, practical guidance.
