The Automotive Refrigeration Course is tailored for automotive professionals, including electrical technicians, mechanics, and plant technicians, the program aims to upskill existing tradespeople to obtain the Refrigerant Handling License (RHL).

Successful implementation anticipates the establishment of a highly qualified workforce adept in modern automotive refrigeration systems, mitigating industry shortages and endorsing the clean economy agenda.

This course prepares graduates to obtain their 'AAC02 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons' and as such be qualified to work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment fitted to the cabin of a motor vehicle and handling refrigerant.

Students are expected to:

  • Attend 3 days on campus (8:00am-4:00pm).
  • Access theory resources through GOTAFE's online learning platform.
  • Complete all assessments within 4 weeks following first practical class.

Before being accepted to this course applicants must:

  • Obtain an ARCtik Trainee Refrigerant Handling Licence - Trainee Licence.

This licence must be presented prior to commencing any formal practical training.

AUR20220 Certificate II Automotive Air Conditioning Technology (and the two qualifications it supersedes, AUR20218 and AUR20216)

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURETU105 (previous AURETU005) Retrofit and modify air-conditioning and HVAC systems
  • AURETU001 (previous AURETU2001) Install air conditioning systems; and/or
  • AURETU007 (previous AURETU4007) Overhaul air conditioning and HVAC system compressors.

AUR32721 Certificate III in Automotive Electric Vehicle Technology

Units of competency required to obtain a licence:

  • AURETU104 (previously AURETU004 or AURETU3004) Diagnose and repair air conditioning and HVAC systems

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURETU105 (previous AURETU005) Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems
  • AURETU001 (previous AURETU2001) Install air conditioning systems; and/or
  • AURETU007 (previous AURETU4007) Overhaul air conditioning and HVAC system compressors.

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
