Course Overview
Tailored for automotive professionals, this program aims to upskill existing tradespeople to obtain the Australian Refrigeration Council's (ARC) Refrigerant Handling License (RHL). The license is a requirement of the Australian Government through ARC to reduce direct and indirect release of greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting emissions.
The course is open to fully qualified Light Vehicle, Heavy Vehicle, Mobile Plant, Agricultural Mechanical, and Auto Electrical Technicians.

All applicants who wish to apply for the AAC02 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons must hold one of the following qualifications:

- AUR21416 (previous AUR21412) Certificate II in Automotive Cooling System Technology
- AUR30320 (previous AUR30316 or AUR30312) Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology
- AUR30420 (previous AUR30416 or AUR30412) Certificate III in Agricultural Technology
- AUR30620 (previous AUR30616 or AUR30612) Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- AUR31120 (previous AUR31116, AUR31114 or AUR31112) Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- AUR31220 (previous AUR31216 or AUR31212) Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
- AUR31420 (previous AUR31416 or AUR31412) Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Fuel Technology
- AUR31520 (previous AUR31516 or AUR31512) Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology
- AUR31720 (previous AUR31716 or AUR31712) Certificate III in Forklift Technology
Or for one of the automotive trades listed above achieved before AUR05 (2005):
- Successful completion of an Apprenticeship e.g., Proficiency Certificate; or
- Trade Recognition Certificate; or
- Trade Certificate with a Trade Outcome and evidence of automotive industry experience
All students currently enrolled in the listed qualifications may also apply, as they're working towards obtaining these qualifications.
GOTAFE entry requirements
Before this course, applicants will need to ensure that they have applied for and received their ARCTIK refrigerant handling licence - trainee licence. Students will be unable to participate in formal practical training without presentation of this licence.
Student resources
Students must have:
- A laptop/computer with internet access.
- General stationary (pens, pencils, rulers).
- Protective enclosed footwear.

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

GOTAFE offers a range of payment options to help you pay your tuition fees, so you can get on with your studies.
The student tuition fees as published are subject to
change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Please note all fees
and charges are correct at the time of publication for 2024 and may change
without notice.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts, and booklets
- E-learning resources and associated license access fees
- Excursions
Additionally, some courses require students to purchase or supply textbooks, kits, tools, uniforms, and personal protection equipment. Some
specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop. A full

information session or during the pre-training review Interview.
