Mature-age Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120) student Tracey Burge has never regretted telling herself “YOU’VE GOT THIS”.

Her advice to others considering study is “you can’t be afraid to try something different.”

“I’ve got a lot of determination – I don’t throw the towel in very quickly.

“If your heart is in it, and you’ve got grit and determination to succeed, you should just follow your dreams.”

She entered an apprenticeship after landing a job at the School of Armour in Puckapunyal.

“It was suggested that I ask to do an apprenticeship and that’s where it all started,” she said.

“Completing bookwork at TAFE allows me to have a rest one week each month while I am taught how things work together.

In undertaking a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120) with GOTAFE, Tracey is learning to repair and service heavy commercial vehicles, diagnose and repair issues and gaining the skills to carry out welding, thermal heating, and cutting procedures.

"It is a good way to meet new people and I am looking forward to doing the hands-on work. It’s weird being the only female apprentice in my course here at TAFE, but everyone is so respectful."
