Silver Medal for GOTAFE Hairdressing Apprentice
GOTAFE Apprentice Brianna Grassi has proven she’s got what it takes, after winning the silver medal at the 2019 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition for Hairdressing.
The competition was held at the GOTAFE Shepparton Barber Shop last month.
The GOTAFE Certificate III in Hairdressing student currently works as an apprentice at Louka Hair Design in Wangaratta.
Salon owner and mentor Lou Sacco says that Brianna’s skills have improved dramatically under her guidance.
“She’s a lot more confident, she is booked six to eight weeks in advance now. Her work is on par with mine, I’ve been hairdressing for 13 years as opposed to someone who’s been hairdressing for four years, so that’s a really good compliment to her,” says Lou.
"I can do weddings by myself whereas eight months ago I’d think ‘I’m not doing a bride!’. I like hairdressing because it’s rewarding to see the final product, and to see how it makes the client feel at the end of a transformation."
Brianna Grassi
Lou and Brianna have just returned home from America where they visited various salons to further their training in colour and correction.
As a salon owner, Lou says having an apprentice can be very rewarding.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but if you can mentor, guide them and treat them equally, you get a lot out of them!”
Brianna will now be eligible for selection for the 2020 WorldSkills National Championships.
GOTAFE CEO Travis Heeney says “WorldSkills competitions provide our students with an opportunity to showcase their talents in a competitive environment. I congratulate Brianna on her silver medal, her victory is a testament to both her hard work and that of her wonderful trainers and mentor Lou.”
