A short course in leadership through his employer provided Brian Murphy with the confidence to pursue further studies.

Brian was one of 12 Managers from Mawsons Concrete and Quarries, which employs 550 people across 80 Victorian and NSW worksites, enrolled in GOTAFE’s new Emerging Leaders training program.

After the positive experience Brian had with Emerging Leaders, he decided to enrol in a Certificate IV in Leadership & Management (BSB40520) course at GOTAFE.

“It was all about self-improvement in areas I felt were lacking,” he said.

“I was given the opportunity to complete the course and take on an extra challenge.”

While the return to a classroom, combined with the two-hours of travel and full-time job, was a little bit challenging for Brian, the trainers and support staff at GOTAFE ensured he was able to get the most out of his studies.

"I didn’t want to get behind in my studies. My trainers were great in helping me work through my studies. If I needed help, I could email them, and I’d get a quick response."

Brian feels better equipped to navigate challenges in the workplace, and says he is a better manager to his six direct reports because of completing the course and GOTAFE’s Emerging Leaders program.

“I learned a lot during my studies,” he said.

“The unit on emotional intelligence was a big one for me. It was a lot to take in, and it has made me think a lot more about what I do.

“I learned about my management style, and how to communicate with people of other backgrounds.”

Brian feels a lot more supported in his role and is looking forward to seeing his self-improvement continue over the coming years.
