From working in a prison to a local hospital, Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) alumni Angelina Butler is a testament to the many career options which become available after studying with GOTAFE.

“Studying Nursing at GOTAFE is one of the best things I’ve done, and it has led me into a great career,” she said.

Angelina worked in a prison in Melbourne in 2022, following in the footsteps of one of her Trainers at GOTAFE who was a Prison Nurse in Beechworth.

“I had no idea what to expect… working in a prison was very daunting to start with,” she said.

“You also can’t take your phone into the workplace so there weren’t any photos to refer to.

“But it is great to see the scope of enrolled nurses has grown so much, and that there are so many opportunities available.”

While at the prison, she would provide inmates with medication, run diabetes and pathology clinics, and develop care plans.

She would also work in the hospital area for inmates who needed higher care.

“It was just like a normal doctor’s clinic, just for their day-to-day medical needs,” she said.

Since leaving her role at the prison, Angelina has started working at Wangaratta Private Hospital.

More recently, Angelina shared her journey with high school students from Wangaratta and surrounding towns at the North East Health Careers Expo held at GOTAFE’s Tone Road campus.

Following the completion of a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021) in Year 11, Angelina enrolled in a Diploma of Nursing.

“I realised I wanted to go further in this line of work as I enjoyed helping others,” she said.

“I wanted to make a difference in someone’s health journey and be there to support people through the most vulnerable part of their lives.”

Angelina said the most challenging part of her job is the range of needs and complex cases.

To any students navigating their way through study, or any nurses entering the industry, Angelina has a few words of advice.

“Remember to ask questions along the way, as you will be forever learning not only to improve yourself but the care you will be giving,” she said.
