What is an apprenticeship or traineeship?

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a contract between an employer and employee where the apprentice or trainee learns the skills needed for their job while working within the business.
Training can be undertaken full-time or part-time, and can be used as a foot in the door to begin a career in your chosen industry
As an apprentice or trainee, you can:

  •  learn valuable, nationally recognised job skills
  •  get paid while learning
  •  combine formal training from GOTAFE with on the job workplace-based training.

Are you still at school?

If you are still at school and keen to finish your VCE or VCAL, talk to your careers advisers about starting a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Under a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, your time will be split between school, time with your employer, and some time doing training onsite at GOTAFE.
