This qualification reflects the roles of entry-level vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers, and assessors who deliver training services to vocational learners and assessment services to candidates.

The roles may be undertaken by those working in registered training organisations (RTOs), enterprises, community organisations, schools, and other VET provision contexts. The volume of learning of Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is typically six months to two years.

Attendance & commitment

In order to achieve the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, students will need to:

  1. Work through the knowledge areas of the course online to obtain and understand the required knowledge to complete the theory-based assessments
  2. Demonstrate their knowledge and skills through the completion of several practical assessment tasks. For students who have enrolled in the online model, practical assessments will take place in their own time with students needing to access people to act as their learners during these sessions. All practical assessments that take place off campus will need to be filmed and submitted via our online learning platform for assessment. Students who are working in a training environment may be able to utilise their workplace for the assessment tasks, however, this should be discussed with their assessor to ensure it meets assessment requirements.
  3. Complete the required documentation to support their practical sessions & assessments.

General public online delivery | 1-year course length | Part-time study load

  • There are no set/scheduled attendance requirements for this group, either face-to-face or scheduled online webinars
  • Students will be required to work through their learning and assessment materials, as well as complete some research and self-directed learning, for around 15 hours per week.
  • Students will have ongoing access to GOTAFE's online learning platform and will be granted access to each topic on successful completion of the previous topic.
  • GOTAFE trainers will set due dates for all assessments to ensure students have the greatest chance of success in gaining their Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
  • Students will have access to the trainer throughout the course, either through prescheduled online sessions or via appointment as required.

General public blended delivery | 1-year course length | Part-time study load

Students will be expected to:

  • Work through their learning and assessment materials, as well as complete some research and self-directed learning for six topics, each of varied length, by due dates provided by their trainer. This will involve approximately 13 hours per week outside of scheduled sessions.
  • Attend Fryers Street Campus, Shepparton, to undertake and participate in practical assessments at our Shepparton Campus, for up to 25 compulsory attendance days.
  • Attendance will take place on Tuesdays for the February groups, and Wednesdays for the March group, from 9am - 4pm.
  • On-campus session dates will be provided in a timetable and will align with assessment due dates.
  • Students will have access to their trainer for one-on-one support as required online, or by email or phone.

Assessment methods

Throughout the course, students will be required to meet the following practical training requirements:

  • Deliver multiple training sessions, of at least 30 minutes. The requirements of these sessions vary with some sessions requiring 1:1 training and others requiring up to 4 learners to participate at the one time. Online students will be required to source their own learners for these sessions and will complete the tasks at a time best suited for them. The sessions will be recorded and submitted for assessment via the GOTAFE online learning platform by the set due date.
  • Participate in 3 x pre-assessment validations and 3 x assessment validations in a group of at least 4 people, including "an experienced VET teacher, trainer and assessor". Students can complete this task in their workplace if they meet the assessment conditions. Alternatively, students will be placed in groups to work with their peers, supported by the assessor.
  • Assess two different candidates in 2 units of competency and conduct 2 RPL assessments on one candidate. Online students will be required to source their own learners for these sessions and will complete the tasks at a time best suited for them. The sessions will be recorded and submitted for assessment via the GOTAFE online learning platform by the due date.
  • Plan, organise, facilitate, and review an online learning program on 2 topics, for a group of at least 3 candidates. Online students will be required to source their own learners for these sessions and will complete the tasks at a time best suited for them. The sessions will be recorded and submitted for assessment via the GOTAFE online learning platform by the due date.
  • Prepare, administer, decide, and finalise two online assessment tasks for three (3) candidates. Online students will be required to source their own learners for these sessions and will complete the tasks at a time best suited for them. The sessions will be recorded and submitted for assessment via the GOTAFE online learning platform by the due date

Before being accepted into the course applicants must:

  • Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to ensure the required literacy and numeracy levels for the course are met.
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review by interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
  • Be able to demonstrate vocational competency (from within the last 5 years) in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have access to a workplace or suitable training environment that replicates workplace conditions: where tasks such as delivering training sessions to, and carrying out course assessments on, suitable audiences of adult learners can occur. GOTAFE cannot support online-only learners with accessing these suitable audiences.
  • Online-only students must have access to a suitable training audience of up to four learners at one time (these may be adult colleagues, family, or other personal associates) to whom to deliver course learning and assessment tasks.

Technology requirements:

Students must have:

  • Intermediate computer skills to be able to work independently on computer-based activities.
  • Reliable access to the internet and a suitable computer setup for blended learning and submitting/uploading various assessment requirements.
  • A webcam, microphone, headset, and speakers for virtual meetings.
  • A video recording device (this can be a smartphone or webcam) to record assessment activities.
  • A second monitor is a great benefit when studying virtually but is not a requirement.
  • Access to current industry equipment/materials/facilities/training resources required to undertake training and assessment tasks and activities.
  • Access to workplace/industry-specific codes of practice, regulations, and directives.
    Access to workplace/worksite safety and risk management framework, assessments, guidance, inductions, registers, and policies.

Industry requirements

Once qualified, VET Trainers and assessors must meet Trainer and Assessor requirements as outlined in ASQA (The Australian Skills Quality Authority) Standards for Registered Training Organisations such as:

  • Hold the required credentials.
  • Hold vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered and assessed.
  • Have current industry skills directly relevant to the training and assessment being provided.
  • Have current knowledge and skills in vocational training and learning that inform their training and assessment.
  • Undertake relevant professional development.

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

Course Fees consist of 3 different components:

  1. Student Tuition Fee - cover the costs of training and assessment. These fees vary across courses and are calculated based on a rate per nominal hour enrolled in. The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Circumstances may include:
    1. an individual’s eligibility for Victorian (Skills First) and Commonwealth government-funded training
    2. an individual’s eligibility for concession rates on Victorian (Skills First) and Commonwealth government-funded training
    3. ineligible individuals who are required to pay the full fees for tuition and other costs.
  2. Material Fee - where applicable, cover the costs of classroom consumables, handouts, and booklets, e-Learning resources, and associated license access fees and excursions.
  3. Student Services Fee (SSF) - contributes to the provision of student engagement, learning and support services. SSF is a non-refundable annual fee that does not apply to short-course participants.

Additionally, some courses require students to purchase or supply textbooks, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop.
