Course Overview
This is a postgraduate short course and is for students who have completed any one of the 12 qualifications listed in the entry requirements. Graduates with these qualifications can apply for their microchipping licence in Victoria.
Regulatory requirements apply to this short course and vary according to state/territory. This program is delivered over 6 months and students are enrolled part-time. Students must be currently working in a Veterinary Clinic or Welfare Shelter where dogs and cats are routinely microchipped & are supported by a qualified veterinarian (or have a written agreement for supervision with) an authorised veterinary implanter. Students are required to microchip a minimum of 10 cats and/or dogs in order to successfully complete this course.
Students need to microchip at least 10 animals in the workplace and complete online quizzes, workplace assessments (via Zoom), and a written exam.

This is a workplace-based short course and is a requirement for registration as an authorised microchip implanter in the State of Victoria. All industry consultation has been undertaken by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources ﴾Agriculture Vic﴿.

Attendance & commitment
Workplace online delivery | 6 months course length | Part-time study load
Students are expected to:
- Spend approximately 10-20 hours working through their course materials, research, revision, and completion of assessments.
- Complete an online written exam.
- Attend a 1-hour workplace assessment via Zoom.
- Complete a Third Party Report and Log Book.

Before being accepted into the course applicants:
- Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to ensure the required literacy and numeracy levels for the course are met.
- Undertake a Pre-training Review by interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
Students are currently working in a Veterinary Clinic or Welfare Shelter supported by a qualified veterinarian (or have a written agreement for supervision with ) an authorised veterinary implanter. where dogs and cats are routinely microchipped.
Qualifications required to implant microchips into dogs and cats include:
- Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing
- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
- Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation
- Certificate III in Local Government (Animal Management)
- Certificate IV in Animal Welfare (Regulation)
- Certificate III in Animal Technology
- National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing (Level 5) — New Zealand
- Veterinary Nurse (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) United Kingdom.
- Level 3: Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons — National Vocational Qualification in Veterinary Nursing
- Diploma in Animal Technology
- Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing
- Associate Degree in Veterinary Nursing
Technology Requirement
Participants will need to have access to reliable internet and a computer, with a camera.
Resources
- Microchip animal replicas via Zoom in front of the qualified trainer and assessor.
- Students will need to have access to necessary equipment and resources typically available in an animal care facility where microchips are implanted.
- Keep a logbook that documents the live cat and dog implants, all supported by a qualified Vet.

Skills recognition / Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.

GOTAFE offers a range of payment options to help you pay your tuition fees, so you can get on with your studies.

change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Please note all fees
and charges are correct at the time of publication for 2024 and may change

Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:

- E-learning resources and associated license access fees

Additionally, some courses require students to purchase or supply textbooks, kits, tools, uniforms, and personal protection equipment. Some
specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop. A full

information session or during the pre-training review Interview.
