This course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, providing you with the essential skills to work safely and effectively in the building and construction industry.
Upon completion, you'll be well-prepared to begin an apprenticeship in plumbing and gain valuable credit towards further qualifications. Plumbing is a dynamic trade that blends physical work with problem-solving, keeping you engaged and active on the job. Graduates can explore various pathways using plumbing tools, equipment, and materials, including cutting and joining pipes, simulating basic plumbing installations, and working with hand and power tools.
Students will build a solid foundation in the key skills and knowledge areas employers seek, including:
- Interpreting and applying relevant Australian Standards to ensure work meets industry regulations.
- Following Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
- Identifying, using, and maintaining tools and equipment correctly and safely.
- Performing accurate mark out for sheet metal tasks.
- Producing simple technical drawings.
- Using various welding equipment.
- Using plumbing components such as PVC pipe, copper pipe and various plumbing fittings.

This course can be delivered as part of GOTAFE’s VET Delivered to School Students (VDSS) program. Students interested in undertaking this course need to enrol through their school.
Skills First subsidised funding is not available for VDSS programs. Contact your school for VDSS Fee information.

GOTAFE entry requirements
Before being accepted into this course applicants must:
- Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to ensure the required literacy & numeracy levels for the course are met.
- Undertake a Pre-training Review by interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
- Prospective VDSS students are required to apply through their School's VET Coordinator or Careers Adviso
Inherent requirements
- Working in this industry may involve physically demanding work. Applicants should consider their physical ability to complete the job role e.g. bending, lifting, manual handling etc. Some activities will involve physical outdoors tasks.
Student resources
Students must provide:
- Laptop/Computer with internet access.
- Access to digital camera or video camera for visual and audio assessment tasks.
- General stationery (Pens, pencils, rulers).
- PPE including non-flammable sleeved shirts and pants, Safety boots, Safety goggles, hearing protection.
- Basic stationary and battery operated calculator.

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
