Overview
Course start dates are indicative and are subject to change. Students will receive information from their teacher upon enrolment including a confirmed start date and timetable. If applicable, students will also receive information about a course induction and directions on where to go on the first day.

This WorkSafe-approved training course will assist the understanding of HSRs and Deputy HSRs in how they can effectively use their powers when participating in the identification, prevention and control of the risks associated with Plant (Machinery and Equipment).
Who should attend?
Although HSRs are the primary audience, managers, supervisors, health and safety committee members and anyone with an interest in health and safety may also benefit from attending this course

Why this course matters
This WorkSafe-approved training course will assist the understanding of HSRs and Deputy HSRs in how they can effectively use their powers when participating in the identification, prevention and control of the risks associated with Plant (Machinery and Equipment).
Your rights as an HSR
Under the OHS Act 2004 (section 67), all elected HSRs and deputy HSRs, after completing an initial course of training, have an entitlement for each year they hold office to attend a WorkSafe-approved HSR refresher OHS training course.
An employer, if requested, must allow the HSR/Deputy HSR to attend on paid time, pay the cost of the course and any other associated costs. Section 67 also allows HSRs to choose the course, in consultation with their employer.

Attendance & commitment
Industry group face-to-face delivery | 1 day course length | Part-time study load
Students are expected to:
- Attend the full one-day session (9:00 am – 5:00 pm).
- Engage in discussions, case study analysis, and group activities.
- Reflect on how legislative changes and plant safety issues apply in their own workplace.
- Maintain ongoing commitment to applying refreshed knowledge in their HSR role.

Ideally students are made up of Health and Safety representatives from industry that have completed the initial HSR training in the previous year/s.
Student resources
Students must have:
- Access to digital camera or video camera for visual and audio assessment tasks.
- General stationery (Pens, pencils, rulers)

- Offer – We’ll review your application, contact you if we require anything else, and send you an offer. To secure your place, accept your offer and make any required pre-commencement payment.
- Welcome to GOTAFE – We’ll finalise your enrolment and share everything you need to feel ready. You may be asked to attend an online or in person induction session where we’ll outline the support available to you from day one.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) does not apply to non-accredited short courses.

Fees and costs
GOTAFE offers a range of payment options to help you pay your tuition fees, so you can get on with your studies.
The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Please note all fees and charges are correct at the time of publication for 2026 and may change without notice. These may differ to the fees applicable for those with enrolment commencing in 2027.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts, and booklets
- E-learning resources and associated license access fees
- Excursions
Additionally, some courses require students to purchase or supply textbooks, kits, tools, uniforms, and personal protection equipment. A full list with associated costs will be provided to you at your course information session or during the pre-training review Interview.

Contingent Study Arrangements
Where a situation arises that prevents campus attendance (such as COVID restrictions, natural disasters, etc.) and it is deemed an appropriate response in protecting the health and safety of staff, students, and visitors, this course will adapt to alternative training arrangements, possibly using online methods of teaching and/or communication while students engage from home with their Trainers. Any required practical components of the course will be moved to a more appropriate time.
