Introduction

This short course is designed to provide newcomers with a fundamental understanding of farm fencing techniques, materials, and best practices.

Farm fencing plays a critical role in securing your property, protecting livestock, and enhancing the overall functionality of your farm. Whether you are a new farmer, hobbyist, or someone interested in agricultural practices, this course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to plan, install, and maintain effective farm fencing.

Attendance & commitment

General public face-to-face delivery | 2 days course length | Part-time study load

Students are expected to:

  • Attend two consecutive days (9:00am – 4:00pm) of practical training at the William Orr Campus.
  • Actively participate in all practical activities including tool use, post installation, wire work, and safety demonstrations.
  • Engage with online resources in goLearn between Day 1 and Day 2 to reinforce learning.
  • Apply safe work practices at all times, including correct PPE use (supplied on site).
  • Seek clarification from trainers during the course if required to ensure confidence in applying skills.

To be selected for this course, students must:

  • Be physically capable to work outdoors.

Student resources

Students must have:

  • Work boots
  • Sunscreen
  • Appropriate clothing for working outdoors.
  • Water (drink bottle) & food as access to classroom is provided only during breaks (out on farm for majority of the day).
  • General stationary (pens, pencils, rulers).

GOTAFE will provide the following PPE for use during practical sessions:

  • Hi-vis vests
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses.

Contingent Study Arrangements

Where a situation arises that prevents campus attendance (such as COVID restrictions, natural disasters, etc.) and it is deemed an appropriate response in protecting the health and safety of staff, students, and visitors, this course will adapt to alternative training arrangements, possibly using online methods of teaching and/or communication while students engage from home with their Trainers.
