Student Spotlight - Harry Carpenter
Alternative pathway and delivery options helped Harry find his fit.
Certificate III in Agriculture (AHC30122) student Harry Carpenter enjoys the flexible and hands-on training GOTAFE’s William Orr Campus in Shepparton has to offer.
By late high school, Harry was ready to move into the workforce – and studying at GOTAFE has allowed him to do that, as well as stay connected to education.
He works on a farm in Congupna, attending William Orr once a week to complete his studies.
“I needed something to do after school because I left school in Year 10,” Harry said.
“It’s good doing the one day a week with the Cert III, it still lets you work…I get to make money while I get the qualification.
“(It’s been) heaps more enjoyable (than traditional schooling), it’s more hands on and more focused towards what you want to do.”

Now in his second year of his course, Harry has enjoyed learning about the full scope of the agriculture industry, not just the topics that apply to his current workplace.
“I (work on) a 2000-hectare crop farm, mainly broadacre crop farming,” he said.
“Most of it here is fairly applicable to what I do at work, obviously (we learn) a bit of livestock and stuff (as well) but it’s good as a general overview.
“I reckon it’s what I’ll stick with, it’s what I love doing, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”
