After spending nine years in the Defence Force, Philip Serrurier understood the challenges that can come with transitioning into civilian life.

Now studying a Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025) at GOTAFE, Phil is using his life experience to help support others facing their own challenges with mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and community connection.

He first completed a Certificate IV in Mental Health(CHC43315) before progressing into the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025), building his knowledge and confidence along the way.

At 61 years old, returning to study after decades away from the classroom initially felt daunting.

“I joined the Air Force when I was seventeen, so I hadn’t studied for many years,” he said.

“But the teachers have been helpful, encouraging and supportive. If we have questions, there’s always support there to help us out.”

Following his military career, Phil found the adjustment to civilian life difficult, an experience that ultimately inspired him to pursue a new path in community services.

“I found a very hard transition between military life and civilian life,” Phil said.

Once Phil left the Defence Force, he began reflecting on the experiences that had shaped both his military career and his personal life. Having always been someone people naturally turned to for support and conversation, community services felt like a meaningful next step.

He says one of the most rewarding aspects of study has been applying what he learns into everyday life, not only within the classroom, but at home and in conversations with family and friends.

His wife has also joined him in studying, giving them the opportunity to learn together and support one another throughout the experience.

For the future, Phil hopes to work in the alcohol and other drugs sector, supporting people who may be struggling to cope with major life transitions and mental health challenges.

He hopes to achieve this by drawing from his own experiences and what he witnessed during his time in Defence, and “to help people access support earlier and feel less alone in the process”.
