Student Spotlight - Nathan Cranston
Nathan Cranston shares his journey to studying construction at GOTAFE.
Certificate III in Construction (CPC30220) student Nathan Cranston’s journey into carpentry began with work experience, which sparked his interest in the trade.
“I did work experience before I started my apprenticeship,” he said.
“I chose to study construction because I really liked the variety of things you can do on the job.”
He now works in renovation, commercial builds, and framing, with a preference for working at a small business, which gives him a more personal and home-like environment.
At GOTAFE, Nathan is expanding his knowledge and skills in areas such as calculations, measurements, materials, and power tools.
“I’ve been able to take some of these skills back into my workplace,” he said.
He speaks highly of the new facilities at GOTAFE, especially the practical rooms and well-equipped workshops, which he feels contribute to a great learning environment.
“The new facilities are very good,” he said.
His trainer has played an important role in his development, and Nathan credits the course with teaching him a great deal since he first started.
For Nathan, the combination of hands-on learning and industry experience has been invaluable.
“I’ve learned a lot at TAFE since first starting,” he said.
“I really like framing and learning on the job, as well as renovation jobs.”
The balance of skills gained from his TAFE course, paired with the supportive environment at work, has made him confident about his future in carpentry and construction.
