Student Spotlight – Amanda Barclay
During her studies, Amanda overcame many hurdles to achieve her dream of one day becoming a nurse.
Amanda Barclay had worked in retail since she was 15, but recently made the transition to a rewarding career in the nursing industry.
In doing so, she became the first person in her whole family to enrol in any higher education or study.
“Growing up, my grandparents always told me I would make an amazing nurse,” she said.
“But I never thought it would happen.”
While working in retail, she hurt her back and became unemployed, and begun considering what the next chapter of her life might look like.
“I started to look into becoming a Personal Care Assistant, but with more encouragement from family and friends, I applied for the Diploma of Nursing at GOTAFE.
"It was very scary for me, but GOTAFE helped me achieve my goals."
During her studies, Amanda overcame many hurdles to achieve her dream of one day becoming a nurse.
“While studying and during placements, I got a call to say I could start IVF,” she said.
“This was tough, as I tried to fit in travel and doctors appointments, and I needed my gallbladder removed.
“When I started my last four weeks of placement in Cohuna, I was eight weeks pregnant and had to push myself to get through while battling with morning sickness.”
With the support of her trainers and peers, Amanda finished her study just in time for the arrival of her son.
“If study is something you are thinking about doing, go for it,” she said.
“Don’t hold back, because any hurdle can be managed or jumped, and you should have faith in yourself.”
