Student shares inspiration behind exhibition artwork
GOTAFE art and design students reflect on educational value of Sk8 of Art exhibition.
GOTAFE’s student-led Sk8 of Art exhibition at Stellars Café in Shepparton closed on October 14, with students now reflecting on the educational value of the exhibition.
Art and design students were tasked with producing creative designs on skateboard decks, using a variety of techniques and mediums.
The exhibition allowed students to explore their own ideas and interests while demonstrating their skills in drawing, application of colour, typography and design theory.
Second-year VETDSS Certificate III in Design Fundamentals (CUA30720) student Teddy Mills says there was a lot of creative freedom during the exhibition process.
“The main focus for me was spirals,” they said.
"I was inspired by a quote I saw online which said spirals are the most ancient form of shape we have, and they represent the journeys we must take inwards to discover more about ourselves."

The quote was included in Teddy’s design, which also featured a landscape of the sun and moon.
“I included spirals on the sun and moon cheeks – they were a consistent part of the work,” Teddy said.
Reflecting on the many opportunities provided to them at GOTAFE, Teddy is excited by what is still to come.
“It’s really exciting to see your work publicised and out there for people to see,” they said.
“Jan (Trainer and Assessor Art and Design, GOTAFE) has really tried to chase up as many opportunities as possible during my studies.
“It’s pretty exciting to be able to come in once a week and meet different people who are interested in the same things I am.”
