Skills & Jobs Centre team helping local workforce navigate towards opportunity
SJC staff showcase their expertise in supporting the community in times of workforce transition.
Skills & Jobs Centre demonstrated the value of proactive, person-centred career support during a period of significant workforce change following the closure of the Bega Cheese Strathmerton factory.
Working in partnership with Bega Cheese Human Resources, Workforce Australia, local training providers and community organisations, the service supported employees to navigate uncertainty, identify opportunities and make informed decisions about their future employment, training and retirement pathways.
Recognising the need for early intervention and ongoing support, two Skills & Jobs Centre Career Counsellors delivered personalised career services through onsite appointments, community-based support, workshops and regular follow-ups ensuring employees could access timely assistance and guidance at each stage of their transition journey.
Services and support provided by the SJC Career Counsellors included:
- Understanding employees’ personal circumstances, interests and future goals
- Resume and cover letter workshops
- Employability skills coaching and career guidance
- Job search strategies and identifying transferable skills
- Ongoing workforce participation support
- Employer, training organisation, employment services and community partner collaboration
- Ramped-up support in the final months before closure, including weekly site visits
- Transition-to-retirement planning
- Apprenticeship and traineeship information
Employees were also connected with local education and training providers including Northern Victoria Institute of TAFE (NVITAFE) to support skill development, confidence building and future career opportunities.
This experience reinforced the value of flexible, ongoing service delivery and strong collaboration between employers, training providers and community organisations.
It demonstrates how collaborative, person-centred career support can help individuals move from uncertainty toward informed choice, confidence and opportunity during times of significant workforce change.
