Industry experts needed to teach next generation
Teach what you know – NVITAFE is calling on experienced nurses, plumbers and electricians to help train the next generation.
With demand for health and construction workers continuing to surge across the region, so too is the need for industry-experts to share their knowledge.
According to the Victorian Skills Plan, almost 4,000 new health care workers will be needed over the next three years – and almost 12,000 across the next decade – in the Goulburn and Ovens Murray regions.
In the same regions, over 1500 new construction workers will be needed in the next three years, along with more than 1000 agriculture and education employees.
TAFEs play a vital role in providing training to respond to regional workforce needs. And industry experts can begin working as teachers while completing the necessary Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122).
GOTAFE offers a range of full-time, part-time and casual teaching roles, making it possible for professionals to give back to their industry, mentor the next generation and maintain their connection to hands-on work.
It means that experienced experts can pass on their knowledge to help address skills shortages across the industries that make our region tick, all while gaining a qualification of their own.
GOTAFE lead educator in Building and Construction Greg Doriean spent two decades in the industry before turning his hand to teaching carpenters in 2005, and is fast approaching the milestone of more time off the tools than on them.
“Probably from day one (as a casual TAFE teacher) I thought, this is pretty good, and by about four weeks in I was sold and this has been my career ever since,” he said.

“My passion for carpentry, the passion for the students in carpentry is just an extension of that.
“You do the right things by them and they fly, and when you see those lightbulb moments when they start to actually fly and really apply their skills and deepen those skills, it’s as good as building a house.”
Those interested are encouraged to consider a teaching career at NVITAFE, where you can have a tangible impact on addressing those crucial skills gaps.
