Darcy Edgar commenced a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) as a School-Based Apprenticeship with GOTAFE in June 2021, before transitioning to full-time work in 2023 after completing his Year 12 studies.

“I never had a plan on what job I wanted to do, the idea of building was really just a shot in the dark,” Darcy said.

Darcy completed two weeks of work experience to get a general idea of whether he would enjoy working in the carpentry industry.

“I thoroughly enjoyed those two weeks, which then led to commencing my school-based apprenticeship,” he said.

“I’m glad I discovered this job, for the great people I work with and all of the new things I learn every single day.”

Although starting as a school-based apprentice was initially a little bit difficult, as Darcy tried to manage and keep on top of schoolwork.

“Eventually I got on top of it and it did get easier, allowing me to get my VCE certificate at the end of Year 12,” Darcy said.

One main advantage of completing a school-based apprenticeship was getting ahead.

"By the time I had graduated and finished school, I was already going into the second year of my apprenticeship. The teachers go through it thoroughly and make sure you understand what is being asked, or if you need help in the workshop during practical work there is always a teacher to help out as well."

Darcy says he has developed many skills during his apprenticeship and is planning on staying in industry.

“I'm planning on staying working with the builder I am currently with for a while longer, and possibly even starting up my own company one day,” he said.
