Design unveiled for the new Wangaratta Tech
Part of the $116 million commitment in the 2023–24 State Budget to establish six new tech schools across Victoria, the Wangaratta Tech School will deliver world-class, future-focused STEM learning for thousands of secondary students in north-east Victoria. Hosted by GOTAFE, the school will serve students from 26 partner schools across the Local Government Areas of Wangaratta, Benalla, Indigo, Alpine and Wodonga.
Designed by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, the facility embodies the Department of Education’s Tech School Design Principles – placing innovation, inclusion and sustainability at its core. The site will feature cutting-edge STEM learning environments, including specialist laboratories, a podcast and design room, digital simulation suites, high-tech skills labs, and flexible co-working and breakout spaces.
Reflecting a deep commitment to place and culture, the design has been shaped by engagement with First Nations leaders. Architectural elements honour local waterways, flora and Indigenous technologies. The design also supports diversity, equity and inclusion through culturally safe spaces, quiet zones, and accessible features tailored for neuro-diverse learners and students with disabilities.
The school is scheduled to open in Term 3, 2026. Pilot programs will begin in Semester 2, 2025, allowing students, teachers, and industry partners to co-design and refine learning experiences ahead of full-scale operation.
With support from local industry, education leaders, and the Department of Education, the Wangaratta Tech School represents a bold step toward delivering equitable, place-based learning opportunities for rural and regional students.
Secondary students attending the Tech School will have access to all programs free of charge, with subsidised transport provided to ensure full participation across all partner schools. There will be single and multi-day experiences available to students from all partner schools, with a focus on years 7-10, as well as VCE support programs and professional development opportunities for teachers.
