Careers advice changing lives this Careers Week
Following National Careers Week (12-18 May) GOTAFE is encouraging community members to make the most of career advice on offer through Skills and Jobs Centres.
Seeking career advice helped Kyabram’s Alistair Wall change his life.
It was a visit to GOTAFE’s Mobile Campus while it was in Kyabram which pointed Alistair towards his current career path.
“I had always loved technology but lacked the confidence to pursue it,” he said.
“After years of working in customer service at Bendigo Bank in Kyabram, I realised I did have the ability - and it was time to finally chase that dream.”
Following the visit, Careers Advisors helped Alistair develop a resume and assisted him in applying for the Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120).
Funded through the Victorian Government’s Skills and Jobs Centres, Careers Advisors at GOTAFE facilitated over 400 careers counselling sessions in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 130% year-on-year.
Alistair’s story shows that GOTAFE can help find something for everyone, at any stage of their life.
“No matter your age or gender, you will be welcomed at GOTAFE,” Alistair said.
“If you’re unsure about your career path or going through a tough time, please don’t hesitate to reach out [to GOTAFE] - they are there to help you.
“For those who know what they want but, like me, struggle with confidence, I encourage you to take that leap of faith.
“You’ll be well supported every step of the way, and even if it turns out not to be for you, at least you’ll know you gave it your all - and that’s something to be proud of.”
Currently finishing a Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120), Alistair will begin a role with GOTAFE’s Digital Solutions team later this month – highlighting the flexibility of his studies.
“GOTAFE has given me so much, and I felt a strong desire to give back,” Alistair said.
“It feels like a community, and I wanted to be part of that - to contribute in the same way my teachers did for me.
“Joining the team means I can share my own journey, support new students, and be part of an amazing environment that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”
