This WorkSafe-approved course provides you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to represent your colleagues and help make your workplace safer.
Key learning objectives for this course include:
- Interpreting the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislative framework and its relationship to Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs)
- Identifying key parties and their legislative obligations and duties
- Establishing representation in the workplace
- Participating in consultation and issue resolution
- Represent designated work group members in any OHS risk management process undertaken by the appropriate duty holder/s
- Issuing a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and directing the cessation of work
When you complete this course, you will receive a certificate of attendance.
The course is delivered one day per week over five consecutive weeks.

Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text
books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some
specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop. A full
list with associated costs will be provided to you at your course
information session or during the pre-training review Interview.
Under the OHS Act 2004 (section 67) all elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSR) and Deputy HSRs are entitled to undertake WorkSafe Victoria approved OHS training for HSRs and choose their course in consultation with their employer. An employer, if requested, must allow an elected HSR and elected Deputy HSR to attend a WorkSafe approved HSR Initial OHS Training Course on paid time, pay the cost of the course and any other associated costs.

Participants who complete the course will be provided a certificate of attendance and not a nationally recognised VET qualification.
