The Certificate II in Landscaping gives you the foundational knowledge to work in the Landscaping trade.
GOTAFE has developed a comprehensive and exciting program, providing participants with the skills and knowledge to help build a more sustainable approach to horticulture and landscaping.
You'll work in a team to plan and build a series of landscape projects based around the William Orr campus. Learn how to construct paving, retaining walls, and irrigation, and gain skills in machinery operation, plant selection, and soil structure.
You'll also learn the theory and practice of garden bed preparation and planting.
This course can be delivered as a Traineeship or as part of the VET in Schools program.
This course prepares you to work in the Landscape industry. Roles you may be eligible for include:
- Landscape Worker
- Horticulture Worker
You may find work in the following contexts:
- Plant nurseries
- Botanical gardens
- Landscaping companies
- Local government/council-owned parks or reserves
After graduating, you might like to undertake further study in the AHC30916 Certificate III in Landscape Construction (Apprentices only) or AHC30716 Certificate III in Horticulture.

Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop. A full list with associated costs will be provided to you at your course information session or during the pre-training review Interview.

GOTAFE preferred entry requirements
Before being accepted into the course applicants must:
- Be currently employed in the garden maintenance and/or landscape construction industry
- Undertake a Pre-training Review to document previous work experience and qualifications and assess suitability for the course
- Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy and numeracy levels are met for the course
- Please apply through an Apprenticeship Network Provider (australianapprenticeships.gov.au) with your employer to organise your apprenticeship/traineeship contract prior to applying for this course
Applicants are also preferred to have:
- A willingness to participate in all delivery, practical and assessment activities
- Access to a reliable computer and internet
- VET in Schools students must receive the endorsement of their school to enrol into this course. Students will have their LL&N suitability confirmed by their VETiS coordinator. A pre course commencement interview will be undertaken by the Technical Education Centre to ensure course suitability
Course Study Units
Assessment methods may include:
- Practical group projects to be carried out by students and participation in practical workplace activities (Trainees)
- Written assessment tasks
For VET in Schools students the school will be invoiced for the fees. The school may then pass on a component of the fees to the student.
Attendance & Commitment
It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including study and assessments the student may need to complete outside their normal training sessions.
Training hours are dependent on the number of units a prospective student plans to study and the study mode.

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
