Course Overview

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is the recognised qualification to become a fully-qualified Early Childhood Educator.

This course can be delivered on campus, or as a Traineeship. Flexible study options are available for students already employed in the Early Childhood Education sector.

Career Pathways

There is an increasing need for Early Childhood Educators in Victoria, particularly due to the introduction of 3-year-old Kindergarten. There are estimates that 6000+ Early Childhood Educators and teachers will be needed by 2029.

This course prepares you to work in the Early Childhood Education sector in a senior role. Roles you may be eligible for include:

Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.

Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:

- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
- Excursions

Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Bookshop. A full list with associated costs will be provided to you at your course information session or during the pre-training review Interview.

Training package entry requirements

There are no Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.

GOTAFE preferred entry requirements

Before being accepted into the course applicants must:

  • Attend an interview
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review to document previous work experience and qualifications and assess suitability for the course
  • Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy and numeracy levels are met for the course. Those wanting to access a VET Student Loan must achieve a result of Language- 3, Literacy-3, Numeracy-3
  • Please apply through an Apprenticeship Network Provider (australianapprenticeships.gov.au) with your employer to organise your traineeship contract prior to applying for this course. (Trainees only)

Applicants must also supply:

  • a current and successful Police Check
  • a current Working with Children Check

Students will need to have completed CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care prior to applying for CHC50113 Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. Up to 15 units from CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care can be credit transferred into the Diploma.

To demonstrate your competency in this qualification, you will be required to undertake assessment activities including:

  • practical placement

Due to its demanding nature, the course requires high level of commitment. If you are considering undertaking the program, you should make sure that you are free of other commitments during the time of study. You will be expected to commit additional time on top of classroom hours to complete self-directed learning, reading, research and assessment requirements including preparation for practical placement.

Learners undertake a practical component which requires them to complete a minimum of 240 hours practical experience in an Early Childhood setting.

It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including class attendance, interaction with Moodle, off campus study and assessment completion.

Due to its demanding nature, this course requires a high level of commitment with a weekly off campus study load of 6 hours. This time is allocated to review content, complete homework tasks and undertake readings and research in preparation to undertaking assessments. This is in addition to time required for undertaking assessment work and preparing for practical placement.

Students are encouraged to attend all face-to-face sessions and participate in any Workshops and/or Webinars held outside of their scheduled days of attendance. A Moodle platform is used parallel to in class training, and students download and upload assessment work into this space.

Attendance Information:

On campus - Full Time and attend 3 days per week and blocks of placement with skilled industry mentors
Trainees - Part Time and receive on the job training plus 3 hour per week online learning
Flexible Delivery - Part time and attend 1 day a month workshops, on the job training plus 3 hours weekly online learning.

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
