Course Overview

Experience the art of puppet making; be guided through the process of crafting your own wooden marionette character in a hands-on workshop for first-time puppeteers. A marionette is a puppet that is manipulated from above. They are suspended on a wire extending up from the head, as well as being suspended on strings.

This six-week workshop is an introduction to puppet creation and participants will design and carve a simple marionette from wood. Students will experience interactive demonstrations on the construction.

Topics include:

  • The stages of designing a marionette
  • Proportions and dimensions
  • Balance
  • Making the Patterns from the Drawings
  • Preparing the Wood and the Wood Blocks for Carving
  • Carving the Wood for the Marionette
  • Connecting the components of the puppet/marionette
  • Stringing the puppet/marionette
  • Performing with a marionette

Students will need to wear safe, closed-toe footwear (no sandals or thongs) and bring a sketch/notebook, pen and pencils.

We've had to make adjustments to how our courses are delivered due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19. This means that we're currently offering a combination of delivery modes including online and flexible learning and, where we can, on-campus classes with strict social distancing in place.
