Disability Support

Goulburn Ovens TAFE is committed to ensure that all students with disabilities have access and can participate in educational opportunities that are available. To assist in enabling an environment for students to fulfil their potential, Goulburn Ovens TAFE have developed a Disability Action Plan.

This has been lodged with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC).

Students may require assistance dues to:

  • Physical disability
  • Mental illness
  • Learning disability
  • Intellectual disability
  • Vision impairment
  • Chronic illness or medical condition
  • Speech/communication impairment
  • Hearing impairment/Deafness

Disclosure of Disability

There is no legal obligation for a student to disclose their disability unless it is likely to affect their performance to meet the requirements of the course. As defined by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), once a disclosure has been made, appropriate responses including education adjustments to support the person with a disability must be considered.

A student may disclose:

  • Prior to enrolling
  • At enrolment
  • At commencement of study
  • At the time a disability occurs during study

Disability Liaison Officer (DLO)

A Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) is employed by the Institute to provide students with disabilities the necessary support they may need. Their role is to facilitate support for you. When applying for courses, you are advised to contact the DLO, especially if you require support services.

Services that may be offered are:

  • Note taking
  • Tutorial support
  • AUSLAN interpreting
  • Participation (classroom) assistance
  • Disability support information
  • Organising specialised equipment

The DLO is based at the Institute’s Shepparton campus and also services Benalla, Seymour and Wangaratta, and is currently available everyday except Friday.
