Angela Learmonth
Completing a Diploma of Nursing whilst juggling a busy work and home life has paid off for Angela Learmonth.
Angela completed her Diploma of Nursing in 2011 and was presented with her certificate at the graduation ceremony held in March at the GOTAFE, Benalla campus. She was also awarded the Centre Achievement Award for the Health Division.
“I wanted to complete my studies after moving from Melbourne, so I transferred to my local GOTAFE at the Benalla Campus and completed the Diploma of Nursing,” said Angela.
“I wanted to up-skill my qualifications, from Certificate IV to the Diploma of Nursing, I never imagined I would receive the Centre Achievement Award for doing something that will provide me with further career opportunities. “
Angela now feels that she is on a level playing field with students that graduate with a Diploma and has the qualifications to support future job opportunities.
“Now that I have a Diploma I have what the industry classes as standard qualifications and I know I have more employment prospects,” she said.
“It was difficult juggling work and two young children but my studies have made me more confident in my workplace. The GOTAFE staff were very supportive throughout the entire learning process, they guided you every step of the way in practical sessions as well as for completing assignments."
“My children were sick during the course and the GOTAFE staff were very understanding to my situation and were able to be flexible with their course delivery. They provided me with class notes for classes I missed and always made themselves available via phone, I was never disadvantaged."
In 2012 Angela will continue her employment with Buckland House Nursing Home in Mansfield and is undertaking a traineeship in Advanced Diploma, studying specialist units such as First Line Emergency Nursing: and she is keen to broaden her clinical skills.
When her children are of school age, she hopes to attain a Bachelor of Nursing by taking advantage of GOTAFE’s articulation arrangements with regional university campuses
