Apprentices battle it out in cookery challenge

Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE's (GOTAFE) eight best cookery apprentices from the North East were put to the test at the Fonterra Foodservices AusTAFE 2009 Culinary Trophy Regional Final held at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE on the 31st August and 1st September.

First year apprentice Sarah Bowman from Pinsent Hotel of Wangaratta, was awarded a Silver medal and Benjamin Bedford from Sole é Luna Restaurant in Bright received the Bronze.

Anthony Tasca of Rinalods Restaurant of Whitfield won Silver for the second year apprentices and Jason Donohue of Georgina's Restaurant Benalla secured the Bronze.

Angela Levett from Coops wine bar Yarrawonga won bronze for the third year apprentice Libby Farrelly of Jamison Brewery also took home a bronze medal.

Final year apprentices Barry Taylor and David Benedetti also participated in the high profile competition.

GOTAFE apprentices competed against other TAFE apprentices from around the State to design, cook and present a two course meal to specific criteria in two hours. The apprentices were judged on their creativeness, ability to meet the criteria, taste, costing and presentation.

The Aus-TAFE Culinary Trophy Competition is in its fourth year and in 2009 120 apprentices competed for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals as well as aiming for the top six to compete in Canberra in The National Final in October.
