GOTAFE accredited to deliver Diploma of Nursing

Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE) is pleased to announce that Nursing education will commence in July this year at the Institute's Benalla campus.

The Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV) has approved the delivery of Nursing education from the Benalla campus following a thorough application process. GOTAFE are now accredited to deliver Division 2 Nurse education from the Benalla, Wangaratta, Shepparton and Seymour campuses.

Jeanne Norling, Divisional Manager of Service Industries at GOTAFE, as well as the Head of Campus at Benalla explains, "As a result of recent approval from the Nurses Board of Victoria, the Benalla campus of GOTAFE is now accredited to deliver training for Division 2 Nurse education, and will commence delivery of the Diploma of Nursing in July this year."

"This is an exciting development for Benalla. Previously students wishing to study as nurses had to travel to gain the education and qualifications to become a registered Division 2 Nurse."

"With the increasing shortage of nurses in Victoria, particularly rural Victoria, this development will address the needs of local industry and the community and will provide increased employment opportunities for local people. It also encourages local people to stay living and working within their community which is great for the area."

Jennifer Smith is the Manager of Nursing at Benalla and Wangaratta campuses. She states that it is a very exciting time for the Benalla campus, especially considering the benefits it will provide the community and the region. "This is a great move forward for GOTAFE as it continues to expand the delivery of health education from all our campuses, and Benalla campus is now NBV accredited to deliver a high quality Division 2 Nurse education program," Jennifer says.

The region's Health Industry is buzzing about the news, with Marilyn Prieditis, Director of Nursing at Benalla and District Memorial Hospital commenting, "The hospital is excited by this latest achievement of GOTAFE and looks forward to working even closer with the Benalla Campus. The hospital is very supportive of this latest initiative and will actively support the new Diploma program at the Benalla Campus as it assists members of the local community to choose nursing as a career. This support will include providing learning opportunities within the hospital through clinical placements and creating employment opportunities for some of the graduates of the program."

Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE will commence delivery of the Diploma of Nursing at Benalla campus in July this year. The Wangaratta, Shepparton and Seymour campuses will also deliver the qualification ensuring the entire Goulburn Ovens region is provided with the opportunity to access and undertake quality, Diploma level Nursing education.

An information night will be held at the Benalla campus in Samaria Road at 4.30pm on Monday May 11, 2009.
