Seymour welfare student excels at studies
The GOTAFE Outstanding Student of the Year Award for the Seymour Campus was won by Diploma of Community Welfare Work graduate Vicky Wheeler.
Vicky won the award because of her dedication and ability to learn quickly and apply her knowledge to excel as a student. She consistently demonstrated a willingness to learn and has excelled in applying the knowledge she has learned throughout the course in the work place.
As a result of Vicky's work placement, she was offered a full time position at the Department of Human Services (DHS). Although Vicky had never worked in the welfare industry, her DHS Supervisor said in the second week of Vicky's eight week work placement, "Vicky demonstrates the qualities of a worker who has been in the field for a number of years."
GOTAFE's Diploma of Welfare Work Coordinator, Trudy Land said: "Vicky has set a benchmark for her fellow students. She is a person of principle, holding onto her own personal values and stands by agency ethics, often working with clients who challenge her values."
During the first year of participating in the Diploma of Community Welfare Work, Vicky also trained to be a volunteer for Life Line as a phone counsellor and has volunteered in a number of other community organisations.
Over 100 students graduated at the GOTAFE Seymour Campus Graduation ceremony from the Primary Industries, Service and Technology Divisions of GOTAFE, the National Centre for Equine Education and Innoven. The students receive recognition for completing nationally accredited courses at Advanced Diploma, Diploma and Certificates I through to Certificate IV levels.
