My Backyard Rules - 8th November

Residents of the Rural City of Wangaratta interested in sustainable gardening practices and creating a healthy and productive backyard should mark Saturday 8 November on their calendars.

For the fifth year running, the free "My Backyard Rules" event will be hosted by Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE, the Australian Plant Society (Wangaratta) and the Rural City of Wangaratta at GOTAFE's Docker Street Campus.

My Backyard Rules comprises a series of information sessions, interactive demonstrations, hands-on workshops and displays commencing at 9.15 am until 1.00 pm. The event this year is sponsored by EPA Victoria, NevRwaste, the North East Catchment Management Authority and McDonald O'Brien's.

The activities and displays include Callistemon species (propagation & cultivation), a virtual recycling tour, grey water and water testing, chooks, edible garden (question/answer forum), worm farming, water testing, dry climate gardening, weeds, trees, mulch and irrigation and water saving. There will also be native plants for sale.

The Rural City of Wangaratta Community Pride Awards will be announced from 11.45 to 12.30pm. The Awards recognise residents and organisations who are doing great environmental things in their community.

The categories include Great Neighbour Award; Proud Schools Award; Great Mates Volunteer Award (individual and group); Heritage & Cultural Award; Enviro-Smart Business Award; Enviro-Smart Community Award and the Innovative Ideas Award.

Registration for the event is from 9.15 to 9.30am. Tea, coffee and cold drinks are available all day and a free sausage sizzle will be held from 12.30pm.
