Specialist equine training centre for North East
Over $9 million funding and architecturally mastered designs for a new world-class campus have been prepared for Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE's new Tone Road campus in Wangaratta.
Construction is scheduled to commence in July 2008 and completion is anticipated for September 2009. These new facilities will provide the North East region and Victoria with an equine specialist centre along with purpose built horticultural and animal care training facilities.
The development will house the National Centre for Equine Education and the commercially operated Park Lane Stud presently located at Christensen Lane in Wangaratta. The Stud provides a valuable training facility for equine stud management students and equine nurses.
The Campus facilities will include a partially enclosed undercover arena (65m x 35m), two post and railed stallion boxes with individual boxes attached, with a further 24 boxes, a serving barn, a crush, 10 holding yards, loading and unloading ramp and yards, and foaling paddocks with a raised foaling hut for students. Twelve paddocks will be connected by a main laneway and all will be separated by treed lanes.
GOTAFE is funding a commercially operated Equine Veterinary Hospital that will also be used for student training, with viewing rooms and a strategic placement program for all students on-site.
The main administration building will further promote excellence in education with purpose built classrooms and a separate Vet Nursing and Animal Care facility comprising kennel, cattery and grooming areas. The Horticulture department will include a laboratory and two shade houses. Onsite student accommodation will be introduced in phase two of the project.
