Sports student wins Campus award
GOTAFE's Outstanding Student of the Year Award for the Wangaratta Campus was won by Diploma of Sport and Recreation student, Jackie Anderson from Yarrawonga.
Jackie was nominated as the overall campus award winner from a field of five outstanding students in their fields.
Academically, Jackie scored higher than 80% in all 11 subjects of which many of her assignments were at University level.
GOTAFE Sport and Recreation Coordinator Richard Mallows explained "As a high achiever, Jackie is a dedicated and determined young person who possesses highly commendable attributes. She is extremely polite, courteous and conducts herself with great integrity at all times."
"Jackie is well respected by her peers and set a clear example for the entire class to follow. She completed all tasks associated with her course to a very high standard, always going well out of her way to ensure tasks were completed prior to deadlines. Jackie is a credit to her family," said Richard.
Jackie's passion to actively engage the young and old in outdoor recreation activities resulted in her choosing the YMCA to do her work placement in which she assisted with the primary school program.
Jackie has also been involved with a coaching program at Appin Park Primary School and assisted the facilitation of Primary School Rugby League programs with the Melbourne Storm.
In addition to the many activities Jackie has been involved in, Jackie supported herself financially through the course by working two part time jobs in the hospitality field, in her home town of Yarrawonga. Jackie explained, "Travelling up and back from Yarrawonga to Wangaratta five days a week, then going to work that night was exhausting at times. However, I was studying something I really enjoyed, and now I've graduated it's all worth it."
Upon announcing Jackie as the Outstanding Student of the Year Award winner for Wangaratta Campus, GOTAFE CEO/Director, Peter Ryan commented "Jackie graduates tonight as an inspiration to all. She is a testament at being able to achieve if you have the drive, discipline and passion."
This year Jackie successfully gained an early offer into the Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation at LaTrobe University in Bendigo.
Over 660 students graduated at the GOTAFE Wangaratta Campus Graduation ceremony from the Primary Industries, Service and Technology Divisions of GOTAFE, the National Centre for Equine Education and Innoven. The students receive recognition for completing nationally accredited courses at Advanced Diploma, Diploma and Certificates I through to Certificate IV levels.
