Kickstart your career mid-year
GOTAFE hospitality student Adele Mapletoft took a gap year after VCE and continued to work in hospitality soon realising that hospitality was where she wanted to stay.
Adele started her studies with a Certificate III in Hospitality and Certificate III in Events to support her current role and her career plans and is just weeks away from completing her initial course. She also enrolled in the Certificate IV in Hospitality which is due to start in July this year and she does not plan to stop there with more study planned for 2013.
"I researched various courses and qualifications and after speaking with GOTAFE teachers and attending an interview, I knew hospitality and events was the career path for me," said Adele.
"I am well into my study plans and after completing the Certificate IV in Hospitality at the end of 2012, I will start a dual qualification in 2013 and at the end of it I will have two Diplomas - a Diploma of Hospitality and a Diploma of Events.
"It is like getting a two for one deal and it meant I did not have to choose between the two career paths I love, hospitality and tourism, the dual qualifications will really help me to get the career of my choice.
"The course has been really practical and I have taken every opportunity to do events during my study, like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea a few weeks ago, I love organising events especially ones like that where I can include a hospitality component."
Adele plans to work in cruise ships and luxury yachts and said that her trainers have been really helpful, especially Claire Taylor who has given her some valuable industry contacts.
Adele will complete the qualifications part-time and plans to work in the industry on her days off so that she can practice what she learns.
Mid-year enrolments are now being taken for a number of hospitality and tourism courses. Apply no by contacting the GOTAFE Hospitality Department on 1300 GOTAFE (1300 468 233).
