2015 Apprentice of the Year Annonced – Shepparton & Seymour Campuses

GOTAFE’s Seymour and Shepparton Campuses held their annual Trade Awards last night, Wednesday 9 December at the GV Hotel, Shepparton. The awards were attended by over 220 apprentices, employers, sponsors and GOTAFE trainers.

50 awards were presented to outstanding pre-apprentices, and apprentices in their first, second, third and fourth years from the Automotive, Building and Construction, Electrical, Engineering, Hairdressing and Beauty, Hospitality, Baking and Plumbing learning areas.

Michael Chapman took out the top prize and was announced as GOTAFE’s 2015 Apprentice of the Year for Shepparton and Seymour Campuses. Michael, a baking apprentice, was one of the eight final year apprentices who were awarded the Outstanding Apprentice Achievement Award for their respective learning areas.

Michael recently completed Certificate III in Retail Baking (Combined) (FDF30710) with GOTAFE and is now working at Beechworth Bakery in Echuca, a business that is well renowned throughout Australia.

GOTAFE Trainer’s Kim Banfield and Stephen Pinnuck have been excited with Michael’s progression in his apprenticeship and also his mature attitude to learning and willingness to go beyond what is required.

“Michael is a reserved student but completed all the work required throughout the course without question. He demonstrated above average knowledge and skills in producing a vast range of breads, cakes, and pastries and has proven his ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively with others to achieve agreed outcomes in the classroom environment”, explained Mr Banfield.

Michael began his studies a completely different field, studying 3D animation at university in Melbourne while living in Bendigo. As a part time job, he worked at Eagle Boys Pizza which turned into a management role. In January 2012, Michael commenced a full time apprenticeship contract at Beechworth Bakery in Echuca following a lead from one of his mates and will complete his contract in 2015.

During his apprenticeship, Michael has achieved the following accolades:

  • 2014 – 4th in the Baking Association of Australia’s Excellence in Baking Victorian competition
  • 2015 – Represented Victoria in the Australian and New Zealand La Judge Competition in Sydney       finishing 3rd nationally
