The Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) online course provides high level skills training for veterinary nurses working in Specialist Veterinary Surgical Referral Practices where a large proportion of their patients require specialist surgical procedures, advanced monitoring of anaesthesia, and advanced post-operative nursing care.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be employed and working in a Veterinary Clinic or Hospital, and have access to a veterinary clinic or hospital where a registered specialist performs specialised surgical procedures. Students are expected to have successfully completed the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing qualification prior to beginning this course. Students undertaking this course will require on-the-job coaching and mentoring support from their workplace supervisor/employer within the veterinary hospital / specialist veterinary clinic. Enrolment intakes occur in February and July each year.

Career Information
This qualification is the industry standard for veterinary nurses who provide specialist surgical nursing support for registered specialist veterinarians performing specialised surgical procedures within veterinary clinics and referral hospitals. On completion of this course the veterinary nurse will be able to work in this area.

Additional Information
80 hours practical placement is a requirement for successful completion of this course, being 2 x 1 week blocks at a referral veterinary hospital.

Assessment
Participants are assessed via completion of required tasks and a demonstration of skills, eg. Written assignments, practical work, on-line participation, projects and written tests.

Study mode
This course is delivered over 12 to 18 months through online course work. Units are delivered and assessed in a holistic manner, grouped into 2 Units of Study. Students are expected to complete 80 hours practical placement, being 2 x 1 week blocks at a referral veterinary hospital.

Skills Recognition is the process of gaining formal recognition for skills and knowledge that have been obtained through work history, previous study and life experience. Skills Recognition is an assessment-only process - there is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process. Skills Recognition is made up of one or more of the following processes including credit transfer and recognition of prior learning.

Fees
The standard hourly fee for this course in a Government subsidised place is $5.00.
A funded student can expect to pay no more than $4,900.00 in tuition fees to complete this course.
