Apprenticeships and Pre-apprenticeships
Pre-apprenticeships
A pre-apprenticeship course is a great way to get a taste of a trade career in which you are interested. Pre-apprenticeships are full time programs usually held over 16 weeks. They prepare you for an apprenticeship by teaching you the basic skills of a trade.
You don’t need an employer to do a pre-apprenticeship course. Your opportunities for gaining an apprenticeship after completing a pre-apprenticeship are usually greater but it is no guarantee.
If you complete a pre-apprenticeship course it will reduce the time of a related apprenticeship by three to 12 months depending on the industry area.
Pre-apprenticeships at GOTAFE are available in:
- Automotive
- Furnishing (Cabinet Making)
- Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding
- Electrotechnology
- Engineering Studies
For more information on pre-apprenticeships contact 1300 GOTAFE (1300 468 233).
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to people who have left secondary school. To do an apprenticeship or traineeship you need to have a job with an employer who is willing to employ you as an apprentice or trainee.
Apprentices and trainees learn industry skills by combining on-the-job paid work with training at TAFE. Some of the training and assessment may take place at work or in some industries, all of the training and assessment happens in the workplace.
Apprentices and trainees are required to sign a contract of training which needs to be registered with the Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE). When you finish the training you will have a nationally recognised qualification.
As an apprentice or trainee you will receive wages and other benefits to which employees are entitled.
