The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the standard required to become a qualified trainer and assessor working in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. This includes job roles in training and assessing within Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and workplaces. New credential requirements for VET sector trainers and assessors have been introduced and trainers and assessors have until April 1, 2019 to meet these. Two units must have been completed by all trainers and assessors – TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools, and TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills. GOTAFE is currently offering 5 options for the delivery of TAE40116.
For people who currently hold the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment you can obtain complete the:
Credential Program – The 2 compulsory units which are required for you to train and assess after April 1, 2019. These units are TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools, and TAELLN411 Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills
Upgrade Program – You can complete the Credential Program plus 2 additional units. This will provide you with the new TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification. The additional units are TAEASS401 Plan assessment activities, and processes and TAEASS403 Participate in assessment validation.
For new educators wishing to enter the VET sector you can obtain the:
TAEASS00014 – Enterprise Trainer – Presenting Skill Set – This will allow you to provide training under supervision in an RTO. You cannot assess.
TAEASS00015 – Enterprise Trainer and Assessor Skill Set – This will allow you to provide training and undertake assessment under supervision in an RTO.
TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – By obtaining the full course, you are qualified to provide training and undertake assessment unsupervised in an RTO.
If you are an experienced VET trainer and/or assessor you can apply to have your skills recognised for some or all units of the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
This qualification is designed for those wishing to build their knowledge and skills to seek employment delivering training and assessment services in the VET sector or in a workplace context. It is also suitable for people who are experienced trainers and assessors but need to upgrade to be able to deliver and assess after April 1, 2019.
After successful completion of this course you may wish to pursue further training and complete the TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, a qualification designed for experienced practitioners who are:
– Leading other trainers and assessors in the VET sector
– Providing mentoring or advice to new trainers or assessors
– Designing approaches to training and assessment across a significant area within the VET sector

The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment.
You will receive an Indicative Fee Statement when you decide upon your course. A finalised invoice will be issued upon enrolment. Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Book Shop. A full list with associated costs will be provided to you at your Course Information session or during the Pre-Training review Interview.
Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.
All applicants are required to:
– Attend an information and enrolment session
– Undertake a pre-course interview with the trainer so that suitability to the course and individual needs can be assessed
– Undertake a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to enrolment.
– Have intermediate computer skills to be able to work independently on computer-based activities
– Have reliable access to the internet
– Have access to a workplace/training environment where course assessment tasks such as delivering training sessions and carrying out assessment of learners can occur

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
Please note: Eligible individuals who wish to access a government subsidised place, must participate in a Pre-training Review. This will consider your:
- Aspirations/career goals
- Educational attainment and capability
- Literacy and numeracy skills
- Suitability for Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer
Due to its intensive nature, the course requires a high level of commitment. Outside of the classroom, additional hours of study are required to complete online study requirements, reading, research and assessment requirements including preparation for training and assessing.
Students will be required to:
– Read and interpret training packages
– Develop and document learning programs and assessment tools
– Present information
– Facilitate in a number of contexts using a range of skills
– Prepare various records and documents. E.g. Practical placement
The course facilitator is required to observe assessment activities either in person, or by other means such as video recordings, photos, essays and/or agreed third party observation methods.
