The HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing is the recognised qualification to become an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2). This course reflects the role of an enrolled nurse working under supervision of a registered nurse.
A graduate from a Diploma of Nursing program approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is able to apply for registration with the NMBA as an enrolled nurse.
The course is delivered face-to face in the classroom and requires 440 hours of mandatory professional experience placement.
Literacy & Numeracy Support plan
Students are also offered the option of enrolling into an individualised Literacy & Numeracy Support plan as part of their Diploma of Nursing enrolment. Students need to be aware that choosing this option may impact on their ability to enrol into future courses at the same level.
Eligibility for enrolment is based on CSPA test results and Pre Training Review. Units offered sit at ASCF level 4 and the plan is designed to provide extra support in key areas such as written assessment tasks or calculations and maths principles aligned to medication administration. Support content is incorporated into the scheduled timetable.
Information re eligibility for enrolment into the Literacy & Numeracy Support plan will be detailed at information sessions and discussed at the student’s individual interview prior to an offer of place. There is no cost to the student for this program.

The HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing is designed for those wishing to further their knowledge and skills to seek employment in the healthcare industry.
Working in this industry may involve different health care environments ranging from acute care hospitals, residential aged care facilities, community health centres or a medical practice. Many healthcare facilities operate on a twenty four hour- seven day/week basis so nurses work over a range of shifts including mornings, evenings, night duty, weekends and public holidays. Enrolled nurses work as members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team under the supervision of registered nurses, collaborating with medical staff, allied health staff, administrative and other support staff. Patients, clients and their families can range across the age continuum with both acute and chronic medical conditions including requiring emergency care and death and dying. Nursing includes assisting patients and clients with activities of daily living, complex interventions, health promotion and education and supporting emotional and psychosocial needs.
After gaining the HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing, you might wish to undertake further study in the HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing.

It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including study and assessments the student may need to complete outside their normal training sessions.
Attendance at all face-to-face sessions is highly recommended with a mandatory minimum of 80% attendance at each individual unit.
Students undertaking the Diploma of Nursing will be expected to commit to an addition 8 -12 hours of self-directed study per week. This will vary at different stages of the course.
Students are required to undertake 440 hours (11 x 40 hour weeks) of Clinical placement. Travel and seeking accommodation maybe required.
Shift work is required whilst on placement.

The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment.
You will receive an Indicative Fee Statement when you decide upon your course. A finalised invoice will be issued upon enrolment. Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Book Shop. TRAINING PACKAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no training package entry requirements for this qualification.
GOTAFE PREFERRED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Before being accepted into the course applicants must:
- undertake a Pre-Training review
- Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy & numeracy levels for the course are met. As of 1 July 2018, ANMAC requires prospective students meet exit level 3 in reading, writing & numeracy
- have a current HLTAID003 Provide First Aid certificate or plan to attain this prior to first placement
- undertake an interview
- supply a National Police Check & Working with Children’s Check as a requirement for the Professional Experience Placement (PEP) component of the course. In addition, students are required to sign a GOTAFE Student Acknowledgement outlining obligations of the course & PEP & a Fitness to Work Declaration on Orientation into the course
- read & complete the English Language Proficiency Requirements Acknowledgement document included in the Information Pack or as part of your E-Application
- Have the ability to work as a member of a team, high level of communication skills, desire to commit to the course & time management skills.
English Language Standards
This course has program entry criteria set by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council. Therefore students must demonstrate they have achieved the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) specified level of English language skills, prior to commencing the program.
You must demonstrate your English language competency in 1 of the following ways:
- English is your primary language & have attended & satisfactorily completed at least 6 years of primary & secondary education taught & assessed in English in one of the recognised countries*, including at least two years between years 7 & 12
- Extended education pathway – you have completed 3.5 years full-time equivalent of a combination of secondary & vocational &/or tertiary level education taught & assessed in English in any of the recognised countries*.
- Test pathways – below lists the approved tests & minimum scores required:
- IELTS (academic Module) – minimum overall score of 7, minimum score of 7 in each of the 4 components
- OET – minimum score of B in each of the 4 components
- PTE (Academic) – minimum overall score of 65, minimum score of 65 in each 4 communicative skills
- TOEFL iBT – minimum total score of 94, minimum score of 24 in listening, 24 in reading, 27 in writing, 23 in speaking.

Assessment includes completion of required tasks and demonstration of skills. Methods include:

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
