The course is an excellent introductory program to develop a range of art skills and investigate potential strengths before you go further onto more specialised programs. It is also a pathway from the Certificate II in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts course at GOTAFE. This Certificate III level program will allow you to develop foundation skills and knowledge relevant to visual arts practice in contemporary South-Eastern Australian Aboriginal Culture.

The CUA31115 Certificate III in Visual Arts provides you with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills to be able to work in the Visual and Cultural Arts Industry. This course is designed for those who wish to develop beyond the basic creative and technical skills that underpin visual arts and craft practice in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural arts context.

This course is delivered on campus. You will be enrolled into a current qualification.

Pathways / Employment Opportunities

The CUA31115 Certificate III in Visual Arts is designed as skills deepening your working knowledge of Aboriginal culture and its contemporary expression as art, in many forms. It enables you to further your knowledge and skills in the business and administrative requirements to work in the Visual Arts industry as an artist. You may seek professional employment in the Visual Arts industry e.g. Gallery or be self-employed, whilst establishing yourself as an independent practicing Visual Artist.

Further studies
After gaining the CUA31115 Certificate III in Visual Arts, you might wish to undertake further study in the CUA40715 Certificate IV in Design or BSB40515 Certificate IV in Business Administration.

You will receive an Indicative Fee Statement when you decide upon your course. A finalised invoice will be issued upon enrolment. Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.

Entry Requirements

It is recommended that participants in the CUA31115 Certificate III in Visual Arts if undertaking the elective unit, CUATTS302 Produce work that expresses own Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity has “the local cultural knowledge necessary to achieve competency in this unit may only be accessible to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. This unit also reflects the fact that there is no single Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture.”

Before being accepted into the course applicants must:

  • Attend an interview with the Course Coordinator
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review to document previous work experience and qualifications and assess suitability for the course

    Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy and numeracy levels are met for the course

Assessment Methods

A holistic approach to assessment will be undertaken with the following evidence:

  • Completion of worksheets
  • Direct observation
  • Third party reports
  • Written and/or oral questioning to assess knowledge and understanding
  • Written or oral documentation of participation in planned learning activities
  • Written or oral reflection on planned learning activities
Skills Recognition

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification.  There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking.  You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
