Course Overview

The CHC40213 Certificate IV in Education Support is a nationally recognised qualification for employment in Education Support roles. People who graduate with this qualification can provide classroom assistance and support to teachers and students under broad based supervision. Participants require strong literacy and numeracy skills in order to undertake the support role effectively.

Participants will learn about

  • Additional needs such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Brain Injury and Dyslexia
  • Strategies for modifying and adapting curriculum to suit individual challenges
  • Local Indigenous cultures, cultural safety and strategies for working with community members and students/ families who are culturally and linguistically diverse
  • Identifying and responding to learning challenges in the area of literacy and numeracy
  • Creation of resources that support learning and behaviour
  • NDIS and its impact on children, families and education
  • Positive behaviour support and strategies for managing students with behavioural challenges

Successful applicants will be enrolled into a current qualification that is nationally recognised. If you want to further your studies, there are pathways to assist you. These include studying at a Diploma level in other areas, or using your qualification to gain a place at University.

This qualification is delivered on campus, via flexible delivery and through a traineeship. You will be enrolled into a current qualification.

Attendance and Commitment

It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including study and assessments the student may need to complete outside their normal training sessions or work hours.

Training hours may vary depending on the number of units a prospective student or employer

On Campus: Participants studying via this mode undertake training 3 days per week. Placement occurs in a registered school setting and is organised by GOTAFE on the student’s behalf. The 160-hour requirement is completed one day per week for a portion of the course and should include at least two separate age groups.

Flexible Delivery: Participants studying via this mode work in a registered education setting in a role where they have direct contact with students. Tuition is provided through flexible modes of delivery which include a blend of webinars, face to face classes, workshops, participation in Moodle activities and forums. The 160 hour placement requirement can be undertaken in a range of ways.

Traineeship: Traineeships are completed over a 12 month duration. The majority of training is completed “On the Job”, supplemented by a blended delivery approach. This involves interaction with Moodle, participation in forum discussions, workplace training and assessment visits, and attendance at 4 scheduled workshops to cover topics such as legislation, literacy, numeracy, and cultural safety. Webinars and negotiated catch up sessions are offered as required to provide trainees with the support they need to achieve success. Learning resources are provided for all subjects; these contain information and knowledge that will support assessment completion.

Workplace attendance requirements are in accordance with employer policies & procedures.

You will receive an Indicative Fee Statement when you decide upon your course. A finalised invoice will be issued upon enrolment. Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.

  • E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
  • Excursions

Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Before being accepted into the course applicants must:

  • Undertake a pre-training review to assess suitability for the course. This includes documenting previous work experience, prior qualifications and strategies to support study and course completion.
  • Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy and numeracy levels are met for the course.
  • Register with the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (Apprentices and trainees only)

Students will also be required to attend a formal interview and have a current and successful Police and Working with Children Checks

Skills Recognition

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification.  There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking.  You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
