The FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting is one of the recognised qualification which is required to undertake a professional accounting job role in the financial services industry. These roles include tax agents, accounts payable and accounts receivable officers, payroll service providers, and employees performing a range of accounting tasks for organisations in a range of industries.
Work functions in the occupational areas where this qualification may be used are subject to regulatory requirements. This qualification includes units that comprise an approved Tax Practitioner Board (TPB) course in Australian taxation law and commercial law, which are relevant for registration as a tax agent. Persons seeking registration with the TPB should check current registration requirements with the TPB, as registration requirements are reviewed regularly.
Topics covered include:
- preparing financial reports, operational budgets, financial statements and tax documentation for individuals
- providing financial, business performance and management accounting information
- managing budgets and forecasts
- implementing and maintaining internal control procedures
- advanced Excel
- communicating effectively with clients
This qualification is delivered on campus, but can also can also be undertaken off-campus.

The FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting is designed for those wishing to further their knowledge and skills to seek employment in or become more effective in professional accounting job roles in the financial services industry.
Working in this industry generally involves working business hours, Monday to Friday with peak busy periods at the end of the month, quarterly and at the end of the financial year.
After gaining the FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting, you might wish to undertake further study at the University level.

It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including study and assessments the student may need to complete outside their normal training sessions.
You will be enrolled in a total of 350 training hours.
If attending on-campus classes, students will be required to attend the timetabled 6 hours per week and undertake a minimum of 10 hours per week of self-directed learning, researching, studying and completing the required exercises and assessments.
If you are unable to attend the timetabled on-campus classes you will be required to contact your teacher and catch up before the next class.
If undertaking the course off-campus a timetable for completion will be developed with you. You will be expected to complete the required reading, research, exercises and assessments through self-direction. You will be supported by your teachers as required via phone, email and one-on-one face-to-face or Skype meetings.

The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment.
You will receive an Indicative Fee Statement when you decide upon your course. A finalised invoice will be issued upon enrolment. Students will be invoiced for the components of the course that they are enrolled into for each year or semester.
Material fees cover costs associated with the following where applicable, and not limited to:
- Classroom activity consumables, handouts and booklets
- E-Learning resources and associated license access fees
Additionally some courses require students to purchase or supply text books, kits, tools, uniforms and personal protection equipment. Some specific materials may be purchased through the GOTAFE Book Shop. A full list with associated costs will be provided to you at your Course Information session or during the Pre-Training review Interview.
Training package entry requirements
Completion of the following seven units, or their equivalent, which constitute the requirements for the FNSSS00014 Accounting Principles Skill Set:
- FNSACC311 Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
- FNSACC312 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
- FNSACC408 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
- FNSACC416 Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
- FNSTPB401 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements
- FNSTPB402 Establish and maintain payroll systems;
- BSBFIA401 Prepare financial reports
Completion of FNS40615 Certificate IV in Accounting or equivalent;
Completion of FNS40215 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or equivalent.
GOTAFE preferred entry requirements
Before being accepted into the course you must:
- Attend an interview
- Undertake a Pre-training Review to document your previous work experience and qualifications and assess your suitability for the course
- Complete a CSPA test to ensure you have the required language, literacy and numeracy levels required for the course
The selection criteria for this course are:
- Ability to undertake training at this qualification level
- Literacy and numeracy skills of an appropriate level
- Keen interest in this Industry sector
- Ability to communicate with others
- Computer skills in Word, Excel and use of the Internet to a basic level
- Ability to organise study and work independently
- The ability to attend timetabled on-campus classes

Assessment methods will vary to best suit the assessment requirements of the unit. These may include class room activities and observation, role plays, assignments, short answer questions, supervised tests and portfolios.
Trainees work through set learning assessments as indicated by their trainer.
Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
