The ACM10117 Certificate I in Animal Studies prepares you for work activities undertaken by a cross-section of animal care and management enterprises such as assistant animal care worker, assistant animal shelter attendant, assistant kennel hand and assistant cattery attendant.
This qualification is part of the Victorian VETiS and Tasmanian Secondary Schools Animal Studies Pathway Programs and is an excellent head start to fulfilling careers in animal care industries.
You will learn general animal care and work skills as an entry into a variety of animal care careers.
This is a nationally recognised qualification and successful completion in Tasmania may give you 20 TCE points.
You will be enrolled into a current qualification.
The ACM10117 Certificate I in Animal Studies is designed for those wishing to further their knowledge and skills to seek employment in the animal care industry.
Job roles may include:
- Animal Attendant
- Animal Attendant (Animal Shelter)
- Animal Attendant (Veterinary Clinic)
Working in this industry may involve after hours and weekend work in workplaces such as animal shelters, kennels, catteries, sanctuaries and veterinary clinics. The work mostly takes place under direct supervision of a senior staff member or manager.
It also requires a level of fitness that allows you to safely handle a range of animals. General duties for animal attendants and junior veterinary nurses may include:
- Cleaning and disinfection
- Feeding animals
- Exercising & enrichment activities
After gaining the Certificate I in Animal Studies you might wish to undertake further study in:
- ACM20117 Certificate II in Animal Studies
- ACM30617 Certificate III in Pet Grooming
It is important that students commit to all course requirements, including study and assessments the student may need to complete outside their normal training sessions.
Students will be enrolled into 230 hours of training.
Over the duration of this course all students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours in a workplace and undertake set practical tasks.

Training package entry requirements
There are no training package entry requirements for this course.
GOTAFE preferred entry requirements
It is preferred that all students:
- Are attending Secondary School in either Victoria or Tasmania
- Have some experience with companion animals
- Be over 15 years of age at time of commencement
- Have a moderate level of physical fitness, agility and strength
- Have access to animals and animal care work places in order to complete the required 40 hours in a workplace
- Have reliable access to a computer, internet and email in order to undertake the online components of the course
- Have current Tetanus immunisation
VET in School (VETiS) students will have their LL&N suitability confirmed by their VETiS coordinator.
The entry process will involve the student’s school VET coordinator who will approve the student engaging in this VETiS program.
VET in Schools students must receive the endorsement of their school to enrol into this course.

- Practical demonstrations

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.
You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:
- Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
